On July 4, Americans will celebrate its Independence Day (whenever I hear the word "independence", Will Smith pops into mind because of that movie!). Just a li'l trivia for Americans and non-Americans:
1.America was legally separated from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. But the US Congress officially adopted and signed the Declaration of Independence (authored by Thomas Jefferson) on July 4, hence the date of the celebration.
2. Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. John Adams and Benjamin Franklin edited and revised it to what it is today.
3. Thomas Paine's pamphlet titled "Common Sense" was what spurred American colonists to join arms and seek independence from Great Britain's rule. Just proves that the pen is mightier than the sword. However, the unrest was originally stirred by British plans to impose taxes on the 13 colonies (which would later on be USA). So...nothing is certain but death and taxes huh?
4. Jefferson presented the first draft of the Declaration before congress for voting. Of the 13 colonies, 9 voted in favor, 2 voted no (Pennsylvania and South Carolina), Delaware was undecided while the Big Apple (NY) abstained.
5. Meaning of colors on the US flag. For the vertical stripes, White means purity and innoncence; Red- valour; Blue- color of the Chief. The broad band about the stripes signify vigilance, perseverance and justice.
Another interesting trivia I culled online, but I don't know if this ismy confirmed: Reese Witherspoon, the actress, is a direct descendant of one of the founding forefathers who signed the Declaration- Congress delegate John Witherspoon. The movie "Legally Blonde" now takes on a whole new meaning for me :-)
In view of all that, I present to you my kit for Scrap Outside The Box's first round of summer challenge:
When I saw the color swatch for this challenge, I cringed. It was obviously about the US Independence Day celebration which I knew zilch about. So I do what journalists do naturally- research. Which is how I stumbled upon all those trivia. But even armed with all the facts, they're pretty useless if you're totally uninspired, right?
So I went and watched Tom Cruise in "Born on the Fourth of July." The movie, however, did very little to light the idea bulb up. So I then turned to my celluloid-boyfriend Nicholas Cage's National Treasure and the history buff slash treasure hunter almost broke the idea bulb to pieces. :-D Thanks Nick (You really shouldn't have done Ghost Rider, nevertheless, I still adore you. Next to Chris of course! hehe).
Ok back to kit. It is currently at a low, LOW price of $2.50. It is crammed with vintage-y, rusty, patriotic-y stuff with a rusty-metal edged, old newspaper alpha. After 8 days, all the summer challenge kits will be regularly priced. So grab them now while it's still cheap!

WOW... this is the BEST looking 4th of July/USA kit I have seen. Love the rich colors and the unique elements. I am totally gonna grab this... but have to wait till payday!
